FLL and FTC Volunteer Position
Descriptions
Setup/Tare Down Crew (10+ Volunteers) Involves setup and tare down of competition field(s), preparation of game pieces,
marking floor for queuing of teams and crowd control. No heavy lifting is required. Setup is done the evening before the competition and tare down
is immediately after the competition.
Judges (14-20 Volunteers)
These men and women serve as role models to
the participants through their actions and frequent
interactions during the event, most significantly during the
team Technical
and Research presentations. Based on their assessments of team and robot attributes,
they select the award recipients for several categories of awards.
Judges' Assistants (2+ Volunteers)
These persons will: · Help monitor and maintain
team traffic flow through the Judging Areas · Assist the
Judge Advisor to keep the Judges on schedule · Gather
necessary information and supplies for the Judges, as
required
Judging Timekeepers (1 volunteer for each
Judging Room and 1 volunteer for each Judging Presentation
room) Queues teams prior to their
Technical and Research presentation to the competition
judges. · Keeps time during the presentation. ·
Notifies the judges when the presentation time has
elapsed.
Volunteer Check-In and Registration Table (3
Volunteers) Individuals assigned to the registration
table will assist participants with the registration process
and distribute registration packets. They can rotate to be
"floaters" following the Opening Ceremony and eventually may
be medallion award presenters.
Information Table (2 Volunteers) The information table should
have tournament programs available for spectators. This area serves as a check-in table for VIP's and the
media. These volunteers are the official greeters and should
be able to answer questions about the site, schedule of the
day, and FIRST. Stock this table with the literature about FIRST. If used,
have the TV/VCR continuously playing the FIRST videotape.
Since this table will remain set up and staffed all day, use
it as a central message center and "lost and
found."
Competition Crew (16 Volunteers)
The Competition Crew is responsible for the competition on the playing fields under
the direction of the Head Referee and Field Manager. The Head Referee will provide any needed training one the rules and operation of the competition prior to
the competition.
· Head Referee
Head Referee is responsible for training, directing and supervising all
Referees. Oversees all scoring processes and procedures. Has final
authority for decisions regarding team scores. The Head Referee plays a
critical role in ensuring smooth flow of match play and maintaining the pace of
he event.
· Referees
(5 Volunteers, 2 at each Game Field with 1 relief)
The referees will work under the supervision and direction of the Head Referee: · Carefully watch
the actions of one team and robot, and carry out the other
referee functions as instructed by the Head Referee ·
Record scores on the Referee's Scoring Sheets and provide these
sheets to the
Head Referee after each match · Be very
familiar with the Game, rules, and all possible scoring
scenarios
· Field Reset (5 Volunteers,
2 at each Game Field with 1 relief ) These volunteers assist with field reset
and moving teams and their robots quickly on and off the
competition playing fields.
· Game Timer (2 Volunteers,
1 at each Game Field - FLL Only) Works
with referees and official scorer: · Signals start and
ending of each round. · Keeps time during the competition
and provides a countdown at the end of each round. ·
Notifies the referee when the competition time has
elapsed.
· Scores Runner (3 Volunteers,
1 at each Game Field with 1 relief )
Expedites the scoring process by running the scores
from the Head Referee to the scoring table.
Head Team Queuer
The Lead Team Queuer is responsible for robot traffic between the Pit and the
playing field. This individual trains Team Queuing volunteers to stage and
position teams in preparation for the start of matches. This position plays a
critical role in ensuring smooth flow of match play and maintaining the pace of
the event.
Queuing Team Assistant
Assists Head Team Queuer with managing and accounting for teams before and after their
matches. Keeps close track of which teams
are on the playing field, guides the teams on deck, and
directs them to the appropriate playing field.
Field Manager The Field Manager is responsible
for: · The competition playing fields · Proper
team flow, on and off the field · Supervising field
attendants, team queuer, scorer, and referees · Maintaining
schedule with Event Manager
Lead Robot Inspector (FTC Only)
The Lead Robot Inspector will oversee and perform mandatory robot inspections
and weigh-in processes to ensure compliance with robot construction rules.
The Lead Robot Inspector is also responsible for training, supervising and
directing the Robot Inspectors and making final decisions regarding inspection
decision disputes.
Robot Inspectors (2 Volunteers - FTC Only)
Robot Inspectors perform mandatory robot inspections and weigh-ins to
ensure compliance with robot construction rules. They determine inspection
outcome decisions (pass/fail). Robot Inspectors may perform random
inspections. They work under the direction of the Lead Robot Inspector.
Practice Field Managers (1 per table or field) · Enforces the policy of "first come, first
served" on the practice field · Clocks and enforces the"
two-minute use" allowance regarding the four practice fields
(two full tables) throughout the day · Keeps track of the
order of waiting teams, using a waiting list if necessary.
Two extra volunteers may be needed for practice time on the
competition playing fields up until fifteen (15) minutes prior
to the Opening Ceremony.
Emcee The Emcee is the visible, audible host for
the event. He or she should be an enthusiastic, well-spoken
person knowledgeable about the FIRST Competition
and its rules. The
Emcee will be supplied with opening and awards ceremony scripts and team information
sheets. Works with the Event Manager and Technical
Director to provide a polished professional event. The
Emcee: · Interacts with Game Announcer to keep the competition lively and exciting for the audience
· Introduces each team during the set-up time
between rounds · Announces the scores · Uses team
information sheets to report interesting and entertaining team
information · Makes
periodic announcements concerning the event or agenda
updates
Game Announcer
Interacts with Emcee to keep the event exciting.. He or she should be an enthusiastic,
well-spoken person knowledgeable about the FIRST Competition and its rules. The
Game Announcer should help collect team information sheets for use with the
Emcee.
The Game Announcer: · Provides play-by-play action of the playing
field to complement the projected video image · Interacts with Emcee to exchange information about the game and competing teams.
Competition
Scorekeeper This individual enters the score into
the computer from the referee's score sheets after each match.
After all rounds of competition, the scorer ranks the
teams using the performance ranking spreadsheet. The
scorekeeper should provide the ranking list for the event
manager. The timekeeper or an extra volunteer can verify the
scorekeeper's work. Verification of entered scores is
crucial!
Assistant Competition Scorekeeper
Provides backup to Competition Scorekeeper and helps verify the
scorekeeper's work. Verification of entered scores is
crucial!
Medallion Award Presenter (2 Volunteers)
These volunteers will count out
medallions, based on the number of team members listed on the
registration forms. They will stand and assist the VIP(s)
who present medallions to teams. This is a logical position
for registration volunteers.
Disc Jockey This
person: · Plays high-energy, age-appropriate music
throughout the tournament · Must obtain a recording of the
National Anthem for each participating country for play during
the Opening Ceremony · Monitors the energy of the crowd,
and should be able to increase or decrease crowd enthusiasm
with musical selections · Works with the emcee and
technical director to coordinate music and the Awards
Ceremony, as well as score announcements
Traffic Control/Security(8 + Volunteers ) Security is
necessary to oversee personal belongings and electronics in
the Pit and Judges' area. Primarily, use traffic controllers to keep attendees
from crowding or entering certain areas and to keep aisles and
walkways clear. Help enforce the number of team members allowed
on the playing field. The number of volunteers
needed may need to be increase depending of the venue layout. Areas needing extensive
coverage are: · Scoring table · Pit to competition
area · Queuing to competition playing fields · Any
openings accessing the stage area, Pit, or playing fields ·
Entrance to playing field
Floaters -
As needed It is important to have extra volunteers on
hand for use as extra coverage in registration or traffic
control areas or as runners for the judge advisor, team
queuer, and referees.
Photographer This person captures the tournament on
film, video, or both for archival and future
publicity
